Illicit timber trafficking in the Southern Macrozone of Chile: analysis of the phenomenology and its criminal actors

Abstract

Analysis of wood theft in the regions of Biobío, La Araucanía, Los Ríos, Los Lagos and even in Maule. In this criminal typology, different criminal organizations with different criminal objectives are involved. On the one hand, criminal organizations that seek to obtain profits through a network of actors, who are well organized and who receive, launder and introduce the bleached wood into the market. On the other hand, radical Mapuche organizations that seek to finance their armed struggle against the Chilean State and the different private companies to obtain territorial autonomy called «Wallmapu.» Likewise, the update of the Chilean Penal Code will be analyzed, which was executed by the Congress of Deputies to combat criminal activity and offer persecution tools to the Carabineros and Investigative Police.
